What makes fine line work different
Fine line tattoos use the smallest needle groupings available and are applied with extremely light pressure. The result is hairline-thin work that looks almost drawn rather than tattooed. Single-needle, fine-line, and micro-realism all fall under this umbrella.
Subject matter that suits the style
Fine line excels with botanicals, hand-poked-style script, small minimalist figures, dotwork geometry, and editorial illustration. It's not the right call for bold graphic work — for that, choose traditional or neo-traditional.
Longevity expectations — be honest
Fine line work does not age the way bold work does. Without thick black outlines to anchor the design, lines can soften over 10–20 years. We will tell you this honestly at your consultation. Many of our clients accept the trade-off because the style speaks to them; some choose to fold fine line into a more structurally durable design.
Placement matters more
Fine line work holds best on areas with stable, slower-wearing skin: inner forearm, ribs, sternum, back, and outer thigh. We'll steer you away from high-wear placements (fingers, palms, feet) for delicate work.
Session length
Most fine line pieces are completed in a single 2–3 hour session. Larger compositions — a botanical wrap around an arm, for example — may run 4–5 hours.
